WIndows and the serial port

I work for a company which requires me to download specific equipment through the serial port. I recently purchased a laptop and went to some lengths to ensure it came with a serial port only to find I am unable to get any of my legacy programs to recognize it’s existance. Most of these programs are DOS based programs. I even tried running Virtual PC 2004 from Microsoft but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?
