Windows Internet Explorer 5.5 not working

Windows Internet explorer 5.5 will not let me surf, everything I click on it it says The page can not be dislplayed.What do I need to do to correct this I tried to uninstall it, and with the 98 CD the computer tried to fit it but it’s still not working, I had several viruses on the computer that have been removed from the sofunny.exe, love.exe,lovebug.exe and msdos423,ini and msdos423.exe all have been removed when I install Norton’s 2002 So what is the next step to getting my computer to surf.I had installed Netscape in the past and it worked. I have AOL and it still won’t surf in their browser either.
