Windows Live Messenger installation problem

I have Windows Vista Business installed on an Acer Aspire 9300 laptop, and have tried to install Windows Live Messenger. I have tried both v8.5 and 2008, and although the installation appears to complete successfully, when I attempt to start the application nothing happens. If I try to remove the application, a dialogue appears which informs me that I have to shut down Messenger in order to proceed.

Has anyone managed to overcome this and, if so, how did you do so?
