Windows Safe Mode

Hi, i use Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Recently my PC has become very slow plus it does not boot up, instead it reboots, whenever i try to start in safe mode!!! What could be causing this? Do you think this is some kind of a virus or trojan and how can i remove it? Thanx in advance…..
