I have a network of 40 workstations with a single Win SBS 2003 server. The only critical application is hosted by a service provider. Therefore, it is critical to have internet access for those 40 workstations. Of lesser importance is access to file shares and email (on the SBS server). With this in mind, I believe it’s best to move DHCP off the Win SBS server and offload DHCP to the router. My logic is the router is more reliable than their SBS server (and their history supports that assumption). If the server is down, no email. Customer is inconvenienced, but the business is still able to function. If they lose connectivity to the internet, they are crippled. I’ve seen many posts indicating this is not an optimal setup. My questions:
1) with the requirements in mind, is this a reasonable solution?
2) what trade-off am I making by pushing DHCP onto the router?
3) If I only lose my Win SBS server, I still have DHCP and DNS (from ISP)…correct?
Please keep in mind their Win SBS server has no critical applications running on it.
