Basically –
PC is ~7months old, dell optiplex 320, core2 e4400 2ghz, 2gb ram, winxp sp2 32bit
User has always used the “old” search companion on the machine.
Recently after a reboot, windows desktop search was installed via windows update, and it is broken, as you can see in this screenshot –

(If that picture doesn’t work, the file is here- http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e237/blindbatts/temp/untitled.jpg
– I’m not familiar with what tags techrepublic uses for images in the posts
Now, what I’ve tried to resolve this –
Uninstalled windows desktop search, rebooted, tested, still same symptom (search pane is blank, old search or new search)
in %systemroot%\inf, found srchasst.inf, right clicked – install (this reinstalls the files that search companion uses), rebooted, tested, still same symptom
ran sfc /scannow, rebooted, tested, still same symptom
reinstalled WDS 3.01, rebooted, same symptom
uninstalled, rebooted, same symptom
installed WDS 4.0 preview, rebooted, same symptom…
catching a theme here? me too.
anybody else ran into this and found a solution?
The user can search using the desktop search link on the taskbar, but any granularity of the search such as by date, cannot be selected because the search pane in explorer is blank, rendering the search mostly useless to this person.
