windows update problem

when installing critical updates to internet explorer 6 through windows updates to a win 2000 machine I keep getting a “backup file cannot initialize uninstall will not be available for this update” and it has a continue and a exit button. I have tried to repair ei6 and reinstall but still get the error. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank You
