Windows Updates hangs

I experince dificulties to do Windows Updates on WinXP. It hangs with “Checking for latest…”
CPU 95-98%. Sometimes after 3-4 min I eventualy get the screen with updates sometimes I have to just reboot machine. Does anybody else face the same problem?
