Windows wont activate my Win XP

I installed a copy of Win Xp on my new computer which is now saying I nd to activate it, when I try to do that by entering the #s it say the product key is invalid and wont activate the oroduct, thus not allowing me to use my computer.
Can anyone please help me…thanks
