Windows XP

my icons .exe changed to .lnk files. now i can not run any programs that ae .exe. this means i can’t run regedit etc. What happen and why can’t this be fixed. Does anyone knows the fix to this problem. This is windows XP problem. Yes i’ve tried restore system etc. It looked like a virus buried in some user data/files…
