Windows xp home re-installation problem

initially when i was starting my windows it used to get stuck on the blue screen right before it takes you to the desktop. i read on a forum that i should repair it from an xp cd and i tried using my friends cd (mine is miles away) and it keeps hanging during setup. my laptop is a toshiba and his laptop is a dell… the setup hangs at 29 minutes during configuration.. i was wondering if the problem was with the cd and what i can do to fix my computer without formatting it. any help would be much appreciated.
