Windows XP media Player Problems

I have Acer Travelmate 2420 laptop with windows XP SP2. The system was working fine until a virus infection. We have installed Windows XP with SP3. The system is working fine except the media player. I tried playing a DVD which comes up with an error message missing decoder at the same time it cannot play any audio s as well. Please advise!!!!!
