Windows XP Pro Lan connection

Hello.
I’m new to this so be patient.
I have a small Maths training school and want to know if I can connect 17 computors to Win XP Po at the same time. All the workstations are running on Win98. The database will be accessed all the time. We do not have the money to buy Windows Server.
Please help.
