Windows XP takes long time to shut down?

I recently went through a virus/worm quarantine on my home PC and supposedly it’s gone, but now it takes up to 4 minutes before it shuts down. If I boot in safe mode, it will shut down in 8 seconds like it use to before virus/worm showed up. Any recommendations?
