WindowsXP pro server, windows98se client

by tomnhanni . Updated 23 years, 5 months ago

I have a XP pro machine at home and at work a windows98se machine. I can’t upgrade the win98 to XP cuz it’s a company machine. I want to be able to connect to my hope PC from work. I havn’t gotten it to connect yet so I thought I’d get some help.
Heres what I’ve already done.
XP machine:
I set up a user account on XP for the win98 machine on to connect to with user name and password.
I setup XP to accept VPN incoming calls. The protocol is TCP/IP.
The ip address assignment is automatic using DHCP.
And the calling computer can specify its own ip.
The XP firewall is disabled.
XP doesn’t require encrypted password.
Win98 machine:
Windows logon username and password are the same as the XP vpn account.
I setup a vpn connection to my XP machines IP address.
Server settings are greyed out but are PPP windowsNT server windows 98 server (i think. not sure writing this from home)
I tried all options without success “log on to network”, “file encryption”, “secure password” etc.
TCP/IP settings are server assigned.

So I double-click the vpn connection, type the user name and password and it gets to “verifying username and password”
the it says “diconnecting from server”
then a window pops up and says something in German roughly translated to “could not negotiate with server. check your server settings and try again. If this problem persists, contact your administrator”

Well, thats all I can think of. If I’ve missed something please let me know.
