I have a compaq EVO N410C laptop that had Windows 2000 installed on it; well, one sad day, it crashed so I thought? why don?t I upgrade to WinXP so I can do install some games on it for my son and I to play??.
Well, I attempt to do a fresh installation of WinXP-Home, then of WinXP Pro, then of WinXP Pro Essentials, but each time, I I kept on getting errors during the installation process; one of several errors that I received during the file copy procedure, was the following:
“The file shell32.dll was not copied correctly. The file Setup placed on your hard drive is not a valid Windows XP system image. If you are installing from a CD, there may be a problem with the Windows XP CD.”
On another install attempt, I got the following message: “The procedure entry point GetUserGeoID could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll”
Both error messages occurred after attempting an install fomr a CD that I had just removed the plastic seal from minutes before.
I select ‘Retry’. It tries and fails immediately without attempting to re-read form the disc! I hit ‘Retry’ a second time and it reads the disc properly and proceeds happily as if nothing had happened.
But then I get the same error only with some other DLL file or ?exe? file or ?Cab? file.
There were times that the installation(s) failed and the computer rebooted only to have to repeat the process again; but now, by what I considered to be the end of the installation process, the machine finally boots up and I get to “startup for the first time” and the desktop is either empty except for a lonly ‘Recycle Bin’ or I have nothing at all on the desktop!!
Well, please tell me what I am to start my Windows experience with?
In any case, at the end of running through a certain and very frustrating application installer, it asks me if I want to restart now.
Well I’d prefer not to just for fear of system critical startup failure, but I reluctantly select ‘Yes’and this time everything appears normal so I give a heavy sigh and then proceed to installing any unresolved driver issues; I promptly and somewhat confidently, reboot the machine.
Once again, it boots up and I crack a smile; my nephew spots a gleam in my eye and laughs; I smile and say, “I better creat a restore point right now before this thing changes it?s mind?” to which he again bursts out with laughter.
I make it through to the point of naming the restore point, and then promptly click on the ?create a restore point? icon to which I am immediately told by the machine that it can?t create a restore point and I should restart the machine and try again!
Well, I try that once (only once) only to get the same error message again?.
I go into system tools and click on ?system restore? and immediately make sure that the service is started and on automatic and then reboot and try again only to get the same error again.
I could keep going but I think you good folks get the point?. I had the same issues with all three WinXP install versions. On another successful installation attempt?did I say successful? ?.
I started to install software for an external LG dual-layer, multi format cd/dvd burner and I get all kinds of similar and weird error messages?
All I wanted was a quick and painless upgrade to the new OS free from confusing user interfaces, baffling error messages and corruption of my existing system.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT?S GOING ON?
IF SO, PLEASE HELP!
