WinXP Pro slowdown

I have some machines that were upgraded to windows XP pro. The machines were fine the majority of the time, but sometimes the machine responds slowly to simple requests such as opening a word document or opening My Computer. I know it has something to do with network requests. There are no programs running in the backgroud that cause this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions of software tools that would help isolate the problem?
