Wireless broadband

by jardinier . Updated 17 years, 11 months ago

I skipped ADSL altogether because I had problems with it (which I will not bother mentioning here) and have now installed wireless broadband.

An Australian telecommunications company, Optus, supplied me with a USB modem. I am on a $AU 50 per month plan for 6 GB usage.

It is quite awesome. I can plug the modem into any computer, it detects the software and installs it and bingo, I am up and running.

I would like to know what kind of speeds any of you achieve with wireless. I am in a good reception area and although the computer says: “connected at 7.2 Mbps” the best download speed I have received is 100Kbps. This is on my newest and most powerful computer.

I get significantly lower download speeds on other computers which have lower specifications. However even on the slowest I get 20 Kbps. It is when downloading updates of AVG Free Edition that I can see these figures.

Col (Hal) has recently connected to cable — in fact I think he may have moved house just to be able to access it. 🙂

One of the main advantages of wireless is that you can connect the modem to any computer and as many computers as you like, but obviously only one at a time.
