Wireless Desktop Router

by jaysonbluejay . Updated 11 years, 6 months ago

I have a desktop PC that doesn’t have WIFI capability. But my (AT&T) modem can be directly WIFI accessed by computers that do have this ability, using the given pass code.
I purchased a Gigabyte AirCruiser wireless desktop router to eliminate the need for a cable from the modem to my computer (too many wires in the way). But the instructions state I need to “connect the Internet cable coming from your ADSL/Cable modem into the WAN port of the AirCruiser G Desktop Router” and then plug the patch cable provided “into the LAN port of the AirCruiser and the other end into the LAN port of your Desktop NIC”.
The “patch cable” connection is, of course, perfectly clear. But I don’t understand the modem connection! What’s the point of a wireless router that must be wired to the modem? What purpose does it serve if my modem already includes WIFI capability?
Question- Being that my modem does send/receive a WIFI signal, do I still need to connect the modem cable? Or will the Router be able to access this signal directly? If not, it would seem I purchased a device useless for my intended purpose.
Thanks for any advice.
