Wireless Home Network to Outbuilding

by hilleyja . Updated 18 years, 3 months ago

I currently have a Linksys WRT54G router. It is connected to a desktop PC, a room at one end of my house, with a network cable. I also have a broadband modem connected to it with a network cable. To enhance range I have a Linksys WRE54G Range Extender sitting on a window-sill in the middle of the house. I also have an optional db reduction antenna on the router. I have a total of 4 other computers connected to the wireless network. One desktop in the middle of the house on the opposite side from the Range Extender window-sill, connection is a Linksys WUSB11 Wireless-B USB Network Adapter v4. Another computer is in an outbuilding about 40 feet from the Range Extender window-sill, also connect using a Linksys WUSB11 Wireless-B USB Network Adapter v4. The adapter is in direct line-of-site with the Range Extender. I have a HP Laptop with a built-in wireless a short distance from the router. I periodically connect using a Palm Lifedrive, which also has a built-in wireless, from the farthest point in the house away from the router.

NOTE: My connections within the house are strong except the Palm Lifedrive. The connection signal to the outbuilding is usually farely strong (35MHz vs 54MHz) at night and poor (much lower than 35MHz) during the day.

What can I do to measureably strengthen the outbuilding and Palm Lifedrive? Will the replacement of the WRT54G with a WRT300N do it for me (without changing out the adapters currently being used with all of the computers)? Is there another alternative? I don’t need overkill because my computer configuration will not change.
