Wireless network

I want to setup a wireless home network with a desktop and a laptop. I have cable internet. Do I need to get 2 wireless adapters along with the router or one. Both computers have network connections in them. Can I use a 3ft patch cable and hook it up to desktop. Then use a wirelss adapter on the laptop?
