Wireless Networks Not Detected

by directlz . Updated 17 years, 6 months ago

Strange problem here and I have gone through days of diagnoses with no results.

Problem is while my system says “wireless networks are detected” when I click on available networks nothing comes up. The wireless icon in my tray has a red X on it.

Other details:
-I can connect via ethernet
-I’m on an HP 5000 series notebook, Broadcomm wireless card, running XP, no SP2
-Diagnostics for the wireless card claim it is installed and working fine
-Others can connect to my network at my place
-a USB external adapter won’t pick up any networks either

What I have done:
-Worked with cable company/ISP
-Worked with Linksys on the router, installing new drivers, reconfiguring network, resetting a million times; they claim its working
-Worked with HP for a few hours, ran through all their diagnostic tests, uninstall/install/upgrade drivers, repair, ensure power optimization, etc. It’s not something silly like my wireless on/off switch is off; we did all the rudimentary things
-Went to Geek Squad @ Best Buy; they are baffled..they worked on it and can’t diagnose.
They took the card out, de-staticked it and reinstalled it as well as looked at other things.

Before I attempt to buy a new wireless card, I’m looking for help/feedback. All involved say that if my driver properties say the card is functionting AND I am getting a pop up saying wireless networks are detected then the hardware is likely fine. So, I just can’t figure out what it is.

Would love some ideas…that don’t come from the first five things you would normally think of! 🙂

The only thing that has been tampered with on my system is items under SERVICES; not sure which ones have any dependencies that are network related. Only one that I have played with to get it going is ZERO CONFIGURATION…but with no luck.

thanks!
