Wireless technology?

Greetings,

My local ISP is offering a wireless internet solution. It’s NOT sattelite and it’s not microwave. It does however require a rooftop antenna. When I inquired as to the exact technology used, they seemed reluctant to give out any useful information. He simply said it worked similar to cell phone technology and operated in the 2 Ghz range. In addition, it appears that each tower has a radius range of about 2-3 miles (4-6 mile radius).

Does anybody have any idea as to exactly what they are using? The main reason I want to know is so that I may save some money and purchase the hardware from a third party (they are getting $1,000 for the hardware).
