WMP12

I am using windows7 and the windows media player 12 is not playing any subtitles like .srt .sub etc. I used VLC player and it could play the subtitles. I had tried even renaming mfpmp.exe but still it is not playing. Is that Microsoft had not allowed the wmp12 to play any subtitles? Can anyone help me with this?
