working with access points

I have a U.S.Robotics access point, a router,a modem connected to broadband connection and a laptop.How do I install the access point and detect it on the laptop??Laptop has windows xp.
I followed all the steps given in the suer manual.But in teh available networks,the network by the access point doesnt show.What do I do?
