Wowexec Error Message in Windows XP Prof

I’ve been getting an error message of “WOWEXEC has caused a general protection fault in module MMSystem.dll at 000A:0032”. Message appears during the startup of WinXP or when I try to install a new program. Windows XP Prof works fine otherwise.

How do I solve this WOWEXEC problem? What is the procedure?
