As an OEM of marine computers for the last three years, we have placed many systems to boats that are subject to shock and vibration. We have for this purpose designed a shock mounting system for the 2.5″ drives we install to overcome this potential problem. Recently we have had a spate of failures of our systems that create the “write to drive C: error” blue screen. We have used both IBM DJSA-20GN and Hitachi DK23DA drives with fluid ball bearings, with each showing the same failure. We have tried to troubleshoot this problem by removing the shockmounts and by changing the IDE cable style. Can this issue be a product of the systemboard hardware failure or possibly a software design failure?
