Wuauclt.exe (service)

Hi,
I just installed windows 2000 server.
In the task manager I noticed a service running called wuauclt.exe. When I looked this up on the internet, Some say it’s a trojan others say its used for windows updates. Can Anyone please tell what this is for. Thank You in advance
