xp booting asks for os cd

A guy at work has a new Win XP Pro laptop and when he boots it now it asks him to load up the original XP installation CD as it needs some files. Another laptop we have did the same a few weeks ago. But the problem went away. On the new laptop if we cancel the popup window 3 times it goes away and the laptop loads normally. We don’t have the original CD so can’t load it. I suspect a virus/spyware or similar.

Could someone please tell me how to fix this problem?
