XP Home:Printer sharing experience

I have a small office of 4 W98 w/s, 1 winXP Home and a win2k stand alone server.
I was able to share Lexmark Z35 printer LPT1 connected to XP w/s only after:
-created accounts on XP for each user;
-enabled guest account;
-disabled Firewall;
andwhat is most peculiar, to print on the
printer there must be a user logged in XP with
admin rights?

I was completely lost.
I have over 10 years of dos/NT3-4 and W2k experience.
but that was very unusual or…
may be I missed smth.
anybody can share their experience?
