XP “Operating System not found” Help!!!

Son was downloading music. Turned on laptop next day. Compaq screen appeared followed by a blank screen with only “Operating System not found” repeats on any keystroke. Tried recovery disks, does not work. Said it completed but did not. Can anyone help? All business/financial info locked in there. Thanks.
