XP Pro as file server

Has anyone noticed that Windows 2000 Pro as a file server in a small environment is faster at listing file than XP Pro. I have noticed this in the past at other offices and we have a new machine with faster compenents and XP Pro. In watching the Old server a Dell Pent 4 list files on the network is comes to the screen with not hesitation. XP Pro always seems to have more of a hestitation on listing files for the network. Doesn’t seem to matter what machine is used just the operating system. Is there any fix for this or is XP Pro slower. This is only three people saving word processing docs.
