XP Remote Desktop hangs frequently

by el-phantasmo . Updated 18 years, 10 months ago

I’m working remotely and have a problem of the Remote Desktop (RD) connection frequently hanging. I can log in to RD fine, but during use it will become unresponsive for 1-3 minutes. After that period, a ‘disconnected’ icon appears then right after that, it resumes functionality.

Here’s the setup:
Host computer – XP pro, behind router and cable modem. There are 3 machines and a standalone server on this router. All 3 are setup for remote desktop usage, 1 using the regular RD port, the other 2 using manually designated ports. All 3 have static local IPs.

Client computer – XP pro, behind router and cable modem with 5 other machines.

As it happens, a coworker and myself are both working on the same LAN, both remotely accessing our respective host computers on the host LAN. She never reports a similar problem, although I’ve noticed it myself on her client machine remotely accessing her host.

Needless to say, it’s difficult to work when the connection times-out every 5-10 minutes.

Any suggestions on how to keep the Remote Desktop connection running smoothly?
