XP sound

I have an XP machine and I can’t seem to figure out why I can’t get any sound from it. I don’t have external speakers, just the one that is built in. Does XP not use the internal speaker??? I can’t find a setting in the speaker setup for internalspeaker. Does anyone know anything about this???
