yahoo messenger problem on client side

I’m using windows 2000Pro and i’m on a network, on the the client side i’m unable to communicate with any contact. When i open the messenger screen and start typing, when i press the enter key i’m not seeing the message i type in the box above nor am i seeing the response from the contact.
