Yet Another Veritas Backup Exec Question

by jason.sutcliffe . Updated 18 years, 1 month ago

Hi eevryone this is my first post so bare with me, ill try and be as descriptive as possible.

Were currently running x2 HP Proliant ML370’s with a few gig memory each, and each have 3ghz twin processors. Both are also running Windows 2003 and with latest updates and drivers etc. Both servers are running HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 tape drives with the 800gb media.

The first server is running Backup Exec with the Exchanger server addon and is connected via the Server on-system-board scsi connector. It is backing up about a hundred gigs, full backup, evey evening with a speed of 2500 megs a minute. Also set to verify with no problems.
Great! Perfect!

But…
The other server is connected to the tape drive also using the on-system-board connector. We have an extra array card going into a HP Storage Works drive array running a total of ten drives setup up as Raid5. Same version of Backup Exec with the SQL addon and a remote agent installed on a slighter older server thats just backing up files.

Now this server is only backing up at 170ish mbps!!!! This is also about a 100 gigs of backup every day. With verify it only just finishes as we are all of home.

Ive been all over the internet to try and work out whats wrong. I know its not a bandwidth problem as ive moved data around different servers, arrays and drives and there all moving a gig of data in about 30 secs(1gbps full duplex.) Ive tried backing up just from the array (over scsi, not from the networked agent)and still no improvement. Ive also thried it the other way, no array only network, also no improvement.

Also tried using HP’s own drivers instead of Veritas’ custom ones. No improvement. Also excluded the install paths of Veritas from any Virus scanning programs etc etc.

Any thoughts or ideas would be very very appreciated. I hope ive given enough detail of what were running.

Many Thanks
Jason
