Yosemite setup failure

I’ve just installed Yosemite on a new internal hard drive on an Early 2008 MacPro. The installation went well and the desktop opens with my existing user name and password but I cannot open the padlock in any of the System Preferences windows as it rejects both. The USB sockets are unrecognized. Any help will be much appreciated.
