“You’re good with computers aren’t you?.. You know them.” …

I can’t remember the number of times I’ve had that said to me, mostly in an imploring voice suggesting that because I’m familiar with the technology I won’t mind ‘having a look’ for free, maybe even ‘just give it a quick fix’ – AGAIN FOR FREE.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Despite my gruff TR appearance, as Sonja has already said I’m a bit of a softy. As I may be. And I know that this topic has already been fully explored within the hallowed hall of TechRepublic with various and nefarious points of view thereafter offered into the fray that ensued.

BUT – here’s a slightly askance view.

Have you, upon hearing then usual comment, ever thought to yourself that you don’t actually KNOW computers at all. That’s because you don’t – you LIVE computers.

I was just considering this when I woke up this morning, having spent a good few hours off and on yesterday reviving (nay, exorcising) a “friend’s” laptop – it’s odd how you discover all these friends that you have, friends you never really knew existed, but as soon as their computer falters…

So – and this is an important concept. How many of you just happen to work with computers ~and~ how many of you actually live with computers?

How many of you so-called computer people actually own any of the following:

A domestic TV.
A domestic DVD.
A domestic Hi-Fi (including Cassette, Turntable, Tuner).
A domestic (old fashioned?) VHS unit.
A domestic telephone.
A domestic telephone answering machine.
A domestic FAX machine (yes – they do exist).

For me? – None of the above. Everything is services by my 3 computer network.

I HAD to get the domestic telephone so that Sonja could call me for the Spotlight, but I don’t get any incoming calls apart from double-glazing and fitted-kitchen sales people (how DO they get your # ?)

Obviously folks with families don’t actually qualify for this survey, so this query goes out to all you simple single folk, like me.

The sad loners in life’s great path of struggle.

The one’s that were born to be vile! :^0 :^0 :^0
