A cracked inner screen on Apple’s first foldable iPhone could cost $999 to repair without coverage. That’s nearly half the price of the $1,999 phone itself.

With iPhone Duo preorders opening October 16, newly reported US repair estimates reveal a substantial difference from Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8. Samsung lists a $419 inner-screen repair, although more extensive damage can increase the bill.

The two phones compete in the nearly $2,000 foldable market, but their published repair charges tell a different story. A single accident could significantly change the cost of owning either device.

iPhone Duo vs. Galaxy Z Fold8 repair costs

Apple’s October 15 announcement confirmed the preorder schedule, ahead of the Duo’s October 23 release. MacRumors reported Apple’s US out-of-warranty estimates, including $999 for inner-display damage and $379 for outer-display damage.

Samsung’s published repair prices are lower for both displays, although the available services differ.

Repair category iPhone Duo Galaxy Z Fold8
Inner-screen repair $999 $419
Inner-screen module replacement Not separately listed $579
Outer-screen repair $379 $139
Other damage $1,499 No directly comparable price

US out-of-warranty estimates. Final prices depend on damage, eligibility and service provider.

Apple’s $999 inner-display estimate is $580 higher than Samsung’s $419 screen-repair price, although the services are not necessarily identical. Samsung’s $579 module replacement also includes the frame and battery.

A Fold8 with a bent frame, swollen battery or other hardware problems may not qualify for screen-only repair. Samsung lists mail-in service for foldable screen repairs, making turnaround time another consideration.

Apple’s $1,499 “other damage” estimate is roughly 75% of the Duo’s starting price. Its repair guidelines explain that inspections determine final charges and authorized providers may set different fees.

Beyond repair pricing, the phones differ in design, weight and hardware. Apple also designed the Duo’s folding display to make its central crease less noticeable, although that does not establish its long-term durability.

How we compared costs: We reviewed published US repair estimates, service categories and eligibility conditions. Samsung’s prices come from its official support documentation; Apple’s are independently reported estimates. Neither phone was damage-tested for this comparison.

AppleCare+ vs. Samsung Care+ repair coverage

AppleCare+ lowers an eligible Duo inner-display repair to $99, with covered outer-screen and back-glass repairs costing $29 each. AppleCare+ premiums are additional to those repair fees.

Samsung’s Care+ terms list $29 cracked-screen repairs under standard coverage and $0 for eligible claims under Theft and Loss. Those advertised fees apply to eligible claims, with repair options subject to coverage terms, parts availability and service location. Coverage costs and exclusions also apply.

Paying for protection can reduce an unexpected repair bill, but premiums increase ownership costs even without a claim. Buyers should check eligibility, service fees and repair availability before enrolling.

Samsung currently lists lower uninsured screen-repair charges, though the final bill depends on the damage. Buyers reconsidering a foldable purchase can also explore other iPhone Duo alternatives with different price and feature trade-offs.

At nearly $2,000 each, these foldables come with more than a premium purchase price. A cracked screen could become one of the biggest expenses of owning either phone.
