Viettel Becomes Qualcomm’s First 6G Early Access Partner

Viettel is gaining early access to Qualcomm’s developing 6G platform, but the agreement does not yet amount to a commercial chipset or network launch.

Viettel High Tech is getting an early look at Qualcomm’s developing 6G technology, years before standards-compliant networks are expected to reach the market.

The companies signed an early-access agreement on July 16, 2026. Viettel said Qualcomm will provide its developing platform, engineering support and software tools, while Viettel evaluates how the technology could be incorporated into network infrastructure and devices.

The arrangement could allow Viettel to begin designing equipment before commercial 6G platforms are available. It does not mean Qualcomm has released a production-ready 6G chipset or that Viettel has built an operational 6G network.

Early access builds on Viettel’s 5G work

Viettel announced on July 20 that it was the first partner selected for Qualcomm’s 6G Platform Early Access Program. The program includes technical support, software-tool training, integration work and testing.

The announcement does not identify a chipset, frequency band, base-station configuration or product release date. The platform remains a development environment rather than a finished processor or complete network system.

The agreement extends a relationship that began with a 5G Open RAN collaboration announced in May 2022. Qualcomm provided 5G radio-access platforms, while Viettel contributed hardware and software for radio and distributed units.

Viettel’s position as both a mobile operator and an equipment manufacturer gives it a network on which to evaluate products before offering them to other carriers. Telecom operators elsewhere in Asia-Pacific are also placing more computing and services directly inside their networks as they expand beyond connectivity.

The partnership supports Vietnam’s wider technology-manufacturing strategy, including efforts to increase its role in semiconductor packaging and testing. A government 6G Development Group established in 2024 was assigned work involving equipment evaluation, testing, regulation and research.

Vietnam has also outlined plans to fund research laboratories, involve universities and contribute to international standards. Its longer-term goal is to produce more telecommunications equipment domestically instead of relying entirely on imported systems.

Standards and products are still years away

Global standards needed for interoperable 6G networks remain under development. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project says Release 20 covers early 6G studies, while Release 21 contains the normative work that turns research into technical specifications.

Technology proposals for the International Telecommunication Union’s IMT-2030 process are due in early 2029. The resulting system specifications are expected by mid-2030 at the latest.

Laboratory tests and pre-commercial demonstrations could happen sooner, but they would not constitute a public 6G launch. Viettel and Qualcomm have not disclosed performance results, working prototypes, procurement plans, operator-testing dates or a commercial release schedule.

Published interoperability results, named prototypes and documented network trials will offer stronger evidence of progress. Viettel’s contributions to 3GPP would also show whether it is helping shape standards or preparing to implement specifications developed elsewhere.

The work could eventually give operators another supplier of interoperable radio-access equipment. Such options are gaining importance as governments review foreign technology in critical infrastructure and carriers weigh resilience, compatibility and procurement risk.

Viettel now has a confirmed place in Qualcomm’s early 6G development program. Its impact will depend on whether that access produces standards-compliant equipment that operators can test, purchase and deploy.
