Adding memory upgrade problem

Adding 64 meg memory to presario 7470, non parity, 168 DIMM…PC will not boot up with added memory (error 164?)..Compaq has ROM bios update available..will this fix problem with adding additional memory? Is it risky to do this Rompack upgrade??
