aftermarket CDROM problems

Computer is a HP Pavilion 6535, windows 98 platform. CDROM was replaced with a Yamaha CD2200EZ CD rewritable. Worked fine till the hard drive was reformatted. Restored the computer with the HP recovery disk. Tried to load CD burning software andit does not recognize a CD rewritable drive. Looked in device manager and CDROM is not present. Also noticed Primary and Secondary IDE hard disk controllers have exclamtion marks on them. CDROM can read data but no audio or video. What happened?
