alternative connection to internet

Please, I would like detail information on whatever alternative ways are available for one to connect to the Internet, in order to overcome the limit of 56K modem and unreliable telephone line connection.

Is it posible to have direct connection to the internet without phone lines?

How does cable modem work? Is it usable in Nigeria?
