AOL Instant Msg Svc

I am a non-AOL user. What is the opinion of the board concerning AOL Instant Messenger Service. I shy away from AOL as I find it so proprietary. But a friend is pressing me to join. I am cable, IE5.5/OE5.5, RoadRunner, Explorer. Reference: www.aol.com/aim
