Application Exception occurred

Under Microsoft Office 97, every time Word is access will produce an application exception error (c0000005) access violation.
trying to fix the error, I have uninstalled the application an again installed word with the same result.
Any suggestion on how to correct this issue?
the application is running under Win NT 4.0 workstation
