Atx pwer really that good?

Hi I was wondering if atx power was such a good thing. Sure it lets things move smoother and things, but when something goes wrong with the power its a lot more fiddley than at power to put right again. Also i’m not a fan of the computer turning itsself off on its own. So is it such a good thing?
