auto shutdown

how do i automatically, and time, the shutdown of my pc?
i have tried the following utilities: autodown, shutdown and poweroff
but the operation stops when it reaches “it is now safe to shutdown…”
how do i make the shutdown automatic so i don’t have to push the
power button after i click on the shutdown command?
