background images & lock ups

I have a computer with 90% of its resources are available. I have run all norton systemworks diagnostics and it is ok. However the images of the windows 98 bachground are not there all it shows is the
triangle and square icons insted of windows 98. The computer also lock at age of empires game for no reason. Could you help me?
