Backing up a corrupt hard disk

The hard disk has crashed in a laptop. It does not get passed 18% scan disk. I’ve orderd a new drive but need the data on this one. The machine was running W-98 but doesn’t get that far. I’ve tried backing it up to another machine using laplink. I’ve tried copying the files using pcAnywhere. The NIC does not initialize so the machine can’t see the network. Any ideas folks?
