Backup of Desktop Data

I would like your input on what you are using to backup desktop (Windows, Mac, and Linux) clients. Whether you are backing up the entire machine, only user files, etc. We currently have over 100 boxes.

I would also be interested on how you perform restores when a hard drive crashes and you need to recover from the backup media. Our current approach is to restore as much as we can off of tape, but restoring the registry miserably fails 99 percent of the time so we are stuck reinstalling the applications.
